ASP and ASP.NET what are the differences

I've read a lot about the differences but I'm trying to figure out the little odd things. So I save the file with .aspx instead of .asp, it loads with just a little pause and BAM it's there! It use to load more smooth now it's almost a shock as in (BAM it's there!) Running Windows Server 2008 standard edition and IIS 7. I setup a page as a .asp, on the tab of Chrome and IE 8 it said "500 error..." when I changed it to .aspx the website name was on the tab. Then I put the .asp back and no "500 error" on the Chrome or IE 8 tab. Is it just me or is there some monkey business going on.

I guess it would depend on what your code is...... what language are you using anyway?
