Create an encrypted script that is executable The script reads in another script (one that you want to protect) The script prompts for a password which is MD5 hashed The protected script read into memory is encrypted with RC4 using the MD5 hash as the password A new script is generated from a template (embedded within the script) which we will call wrapper script The wrapper script containing the encrypted script is given to the customer When the wrapper script is run it asks for a password which is MD5 hashed to be used as the key The MD5 hash is used to decrypt the protected script If the password is correct, the MD5 hash password is saved in the registry Subsequent openings of the script read the decryption key from the registry As an additional security the password hash in registry is XORed with a hardware specific key All native VBScript code using industry standard algorithms. Benefits Scripts can be given to a customer knowing that they can’t be modified or casually copied. Running the script from a server share separates the key from the script. Ease of creating an encrypted script that runs without mucking around or using third party add-ons Obviously when the customer gets the key they can reverse engineer the script and read the code but scripts stored on servers can’t be casually copied unless an individual works out how to copy the workstation specific key too. Script wont work if you try to wrap an already wrapped script. If your script contains same variables as the wrapper then it might not work - test before deploying If your script generates an error then the script thinks the key is wrong and removes the key from the registry - test before deploying For your convenience the password is saved in the encrypted script's file name so remove that before deploying. At least I thought this was cool and I had some fun writing it. Maybe someone can get some ideas from it.
