Free Editor with Intellisense Tuesday, November 03, 2009 1:54 AM (permalink)

Hello,

I have primal script 4.0 which does not come with Powershell support. I would have to upgrade to 4.1 to get the support or something above.

Does anyone know of a good editor like primalscript which has intelisense and preferably free for powershell support as I am doing a course in the near future and will start to code in such things.

Currently I know nothing of powershell so anything would be a good start.

Is there anything like a bible like there is for VBS such as a help file with commands etc like the one which is in my signature?

Many Thanks

James

I use GVIm for my powershell work. If you install powershell V2, it comes with a good editor, but I just can't give up vi commands for it.

As for a bible, there doesn't need to be one. All the command information is right there in PS to begin with. Learn these three commands and use them to death:

    Get-Help
    Get-Member
    Get-Command

I personally recommend using the free Quest PowerGUI tool. You can download it at http://www.powergui.org/. It's pretty nice for a free IDE.

The PowerGUI editor comes closer, but neither it nor the editor that comes with V2 have what I would consider true intellisense.

I don't think you'll find any PowerShell editor that has a complete version of Intellisense, similar to what you're probably thinking of in Visual Studio 2010. Because of the way that PowerShell handles variables, there is no way to identify object members until run-time.

The only other PowerShell IDE I'm aware of is PowerShell Plus: http://www.idera.com/Products/PowerShell/PowerShell-Plus/. I don't know how it handles Intellisense though, but they claim to offer something like it.

I have to back up a step. I played around with the PowerGUI editor again. I don't know if I just didn't see it the last time I looked at it or if the functionality just wasn't there (it's been a while), but it comes as close to true Intellisense as is possible in PS. You just have to run the script once and it then picks up intellisense on existing objects in the code. I would highly recommend it. Having said that, there is no vi emmulation so I still won't be using it. :)

              I am using PowerShell Analyzer.

Its a cool tool with intellisence. Go to http://www.powershellanalyzer.com/ and download it.

              Its worth a try.

              Hope this helps,

Devfarm Software has release PowerSE PowerShell Script Editor as FREEWARE.  The product includes deep Intellisense, including WMI, and .NET classes.  It's worth a try.  http://www.powerse.com

It is not FREEWARE. It is a free trial. Unless the splash screen is lies.

As you pointed out in another forum, you can apparently download it again every 60 days. I will post the same response here that I gave there:

I guess I just have a different definition of freeware then. When I get prompted every time that I use a product that "it will stop working in x period of time, oh and by the way if you don't want to click through this and re-download every 60 days here is a convenient link to buy the product" that to me is nagware not freeware. Note that you should not take this as a criticism. I applaud you for making it available in a fashion that does not *require* a purchase. I'm just saying that to me freeware means no additional burden for use.

Also, if you don't mind, could you please compare and contrast PowerSE to PowerGUI and the Powershell ISE? What sets it apart and what are it's advantages.

Not true.  It's freeware.    Sorry for the confusion, the labeling is a bit off on the product.  As it was originally designed to be a commercial product.  We will fixed shortly.    As for downloading every 60-days.   There is an explanation on the our blog on why we choose this route.  With that said, we are currently reevaluating that decision.

Thanks!, for the appreciation.  IMHO, IT Admins are getting a great product for free.  There has been a effort in building PowerSE, and we are trying our best to give back to the community.  A community that has provided all of us with so many great scripts, examples, and knowledge

I believe the "OK" button (Nagware)  was removed on the update was pushed up last night (8/10/11).  And YES! We all agree that OK button (and BUY at the end) does not met the requirements of freeware. It makes it Nagware.  It was a simple oversight.  Please accept our apologies and bare with us as we smooth out some of the rough edges of going free.  Turns out there is work than meets the eyes.  We wanted to make it available quickly, and well... there's will be a few bumps along away.  Please bare in mind we are a self-funded start-up.  Our heart is in the right place.

I do find it a bit humorous the degree of outrage.   Too often people quick to draw conclusions.  It would be like someone doing a blog post on a script they wrote.  Then the reader sending a comment "WTF, this doesn't work perfect in my environment."   Vs.  Hey, thanks for the help, I was able to tweak it a bit for my environment.

                          Brian

p.s. There are other products that have a similar, download in 60 days.  It's simply a way to lower costs on something that is not a profit center.  I think that's a small burden to ask, considering the cost of R&D these days.

I was certainly not outraged. I am glad to hear that you are re-evaluating your model.

Do you have time to address my previous request?

I think that a discussion like that would be what would help get the work that you have done the recognition that it would need.

And for what it is worth, I don't really have a dog in this race. None of these editors have Vi emulation, so none of them are likely to become my primary editor any time soon.
