Script to view Recentdocs in registry Wednesday, January 05, 2011 8:56 AM (permalink)

Hi,

Does anybody have a script that I can edit so that I can read what's on the recentdocs windows registry key. I need to grab the information from a remote computer so that I can view what files have been recently viewed and the data and time of when the files were opened or viewed.

Thanks,
Dom

Well, your first problem is that the access time is not kept in that registry. The next issue is that the key is an HKCU key, so you would need to search all the keys under HKey_Users. To be perfectly honest with you if management asked me to do this I would quote them a very large time frame for implementation just to accommodate what a giant PITA I would expect it to be. Why exactly do you need to do this? Maybe there is a simpler way to accomplish your real goal?

My boss wants to see what employees are doing and how productive they are by reviewing their recent opened documents and activities. He wants it done without the employee knowing. Is there a better way of doing this?

      Thanks,
      Dom

There are several ways to do similar things. To be honest though, either an employee is productive or they aren't. Your boss should simply find a way to measure productivity. I would suggest that your boss start by improving his management skills. I think a nice six sigma course would be a good start.

I thought this forum is to get help with scripting. If I knew it was for management course I would have went somewhere else.

Define a scripting problem and you will get help. Present a management problem and you get help with that.

that's funny cause i clearly stated my scripting issue but then some nosy person asked and then turned it into a management and ethic problem. Thanks for nothing! I will go elsewhere with my problem.

Actually, I provided the technical problems with your scripting question first.
