Website upgrade issues Tuesday, August 18, 2009 12:06 PM (permalink)

While a new layout always look nice (until it grows old) there are few issues with this one:

1/ The worse annoyance: The "Recent Picture" stripe. I don't come to VBS to visit a picture gallery. It's cool to have a picture gallery but here it appears as it's the main content of the site. Please put the gallery on a secondary page, not on the top of the main page.
Also all moving object are disturbing.

2/ Extremely slow download: Every page take many seconds (20, 30, one minute) to download.
I would rather have a boring minimalist design and have the page poping up instatly than waiting one minute at every log on.

3/ The blue ball on the left of section headers. It looks like you would want to click on it for some cool stuff to appear but it's there only for cosmetic purpose.

4/ Pasting into the reply area delete empty line and doing crushes the article separation.

5/ "Post New Thread" appears twice on the Post New Thread page.

Is this the thread where we can post teething issues to help get the forum up to speed?

I think the upgrade has fixed the problems I was having posting, ie can post messages with SQL words in it now.

But now, with those problem type posts I am getting blocked my end viewing it if I am logged in but not blocked if not logged in.
(That is likely a problem my end)

The code posted is formatted with confusing colours. (I only use notepad for editing) I am not against colour coding it is great for beginners and if you are used to it but the colours are applied incorrectly.

The code posted is not usable to other people hitting the site from the Internet. When I try and copy and paste the code from a post, 1 it is harder to copy, 2 it pastes wrong loosing the formatting.

When I post replies I can't see the other posts in the thread. Likely a setting I can change? Posting replies to complicated scripting problems requires reference to previous messages.

I have said it before but will say it just one more time (publicly) PHPBB3 is better forum software, it is free and posting code works beautifully.

If you want any help or just want me to shut up let me know.

Oh by the way, thanks changing the senior rank to super, that’s a good improvement.

For what it's worth, I could do without the Picture strip too. :)

I think I'm stupid or blind, but I can't find a list of bbcodes this forum supports either. Thus far I've been typing them out by hand

I can understand that but surely it is not too annoying since it is only get showed on index page? I want this forum to have a sense of community, maybe a  gallery will help. thoughts please.

              Admin,
              Thanks for listening.
I understand why you like the picture stripe but at least keep it from moving all the time. Moving objects are almost always an annoyance.
You can also do the slides smaller or put in a less central place, so that it doesn't take half of the rarefied available space (1/2 of the monitor height being taken by the browser toolbar plug-ins and other G-bar non sens).
I can confirm that the page we are downloading are full of bloat and take ages to download by comparison to PHPBB for example.
For the sake of curiousity I saved the source code of the reply page and it already weights 105 Kb (only the main source).
I don't dare imagine what you have server side.
Of course that's not something you can do much about.
I'm also annoyed by the text losing its formating when pasted. It's forum about coding and it's important that blank lines and indentations remains unchanged.
Beside that, I like the new look & feel and, unlike TomRiddle and althought it doesn't always work properly, I like the text coloring very much and it's very appropriate to the topic of the forum.
It's also very nice to see that you do something to improve the forum. 8)

Fred, rest assured that I am going to fix them gradually, little by little, still studying ASP.net code of the new forum software.I haven't been writing script/updating my scripting/programming skill since 2001 so this is going to take some time.

                  ok; Thanks!

One more bug I noticed: code are displayed in a single line!
Do you have the same problem too in your browser?

sorry for my late reply, the last few months has been really really hectic for me, It's 3:05 AM here and I am still working .

I have no problem with FF and just tested it with the latest ie. No problem on my end. Can you post a screenshot here?

I've been having ALOT of problems with the new forum.  None of the buttons work for me.  The only way I've managed to login, is by clicking on someones name, and it lead me to a security page that said I needed to login in order to view this members info.  I couldn't type in Opera.  I had to switch to Firefox, and I got the following error when I tried to access this post:

                        The forum works better now.
The only issue is the code coloring which is not adapted to VBS (I think it's adapted to JS or PHP or something). It doesn do well the comments.

That's not very important: I'll copy paste the codes in N++ if I need to analyse it.

I am sorry guys . I won't be able to look after this forum for some time . I am currently in deep crisis in my life. Lost a house and a lot of money in Asian and US stock market and my small business is not profitable, it was, and I have a wife and two small children to support, I have to work very hard to make ends meet. I will put more effort into this site when my conditions are beginning to stabilize.

For the past years, I got/gained a lot from this forum in terms of knowledge,
challenges, fun, and (for lack of a better word:) friendship. All my best wishes
for you and your family: you will master this crisis, I know you can!

Everything on this forum is extremely slow and buggy because there is way too much javascripts down here.
For exapmle why several large pieces of scripts have to be launched everytime one click on the "Fast Reply" box?
Javascripts are making way too much control on the pages.
They also create random errors resulting in the page not displayed.
