What Editor Do You Use v2.0 Wednesday, March 03, 2010 7:47 AM (permalink)

Someone just made a valid point that the previous editor poll was a bit out of date. I'm going to start a new one and challenge everyone to not only post but to vote as well. Even if you have already done so in the previous version. I think it will be interesting to compare the two.

So, what editor do you use for VBScript and why?

For reference, here is the original "What Editor Do You Use" thread:

I think everyone already knows, but I still use GVim pretty much exclusively. Keyboard navigation rules.

Since v2 I have been using UltraEdit.  V16 came out this week and is light years ahead of where it was when I started using it.  Having tried many of the editors listed, I keep coming back to UE.  It is solid and customizable to a fault in may ways.

I also use Notepad++ from my thumbdrive when I am not at my main computer.  It is also a very strong editor with nearly as many pros as UltraEdit.

In the past, I have used and tried Primal Script, Visual Studio (I sill have it, but since I rarely do more than VBS or web development, I stick with UE or N++) and other smaller editors.

      Thanks, BTW.

        I use PSpad right now.
The main reason is because it's free.  :)

Still using PrimalScript (Ver 2007 now).

            Edit:
Thought I would add something that I like about it.  Outside of the ease of use, and color coding, is Snippets.  Basically allows me to reuse code easily, inserting with a double click.

VBSEdit. Not that its the best in the world, but it loads almost instantly and has enough features to make it worth while for now:

              - Syntax Highlighting
              - Object Browser
              - Code Completion
              - Debugging
              - WMI/COM/Code snippets and examples
              - .EXE conversion option.

I wouldn't suggest Adersofts other products though.
HTAEdit is a hacky piece of garbage, and JSEdit doesn't highlight code correctly and is behind by about 5 versions of at least of language support.

My tool of choice is PrimalScript

                - Syntax Highlighting
                - Object Browser
                - Code Completion
                - Snippets (can insert saved code w/ shortcuts)
                - EXE wrapping options for Scripts (including HTA, ability to run under alternate credentials, run in memory for a little extra security)
                - been using it for several years now and haven't had a reason to try anything else really

I will second that if you have the money, PrimalScript would be my non-Vi editor of choice. If they would just get Vi emmulation in there...

I use EditPlus.  The reason is simple - it's lightweight, provides good syntax highlighting, and allows for just enough custom tool support that it's trivial to set up keyboard shortcuts to run a given script in CSCRIPT or WSCRIPT.

I used UltraEdit for a while but found it too cumbersome - it's an incredibly powerful tool but much of the bulk just got in my way when all I wanted was to edit text with good syntax highlighting :)

                        I use ExeScript PRO http://www.scriptcode.com/vbscripteditor/

                        Syntax highlighting.

                        It is tabbed.

                        Supports different languages.

ExeScript PRO can compile my vbscripts to an executable.

                        The built-in script debugger.
                        IMHO its a great editor.

Primal Script has been my choice, if the company can afford it. I like the snippets, the syntax highlighting as well. If nothing else, then it's the regular notepad.
I also want to thank you all for all of the help along the way. It's been a few years...

There aren't enough people using it to justify it's own category. As far as I know, I'm the only here that does.

                                      VBSEdit all the way!

Trial version is useful but not if you need to debug the code, better if you get the full version or find an alternative ;-)
                                      • The ability to save snippets of code
                                      • Use of Cscript or Wscript at the click of a button
                                      • Pass commandline arguments within the appliaction
                                      • Debugging is amazing with the Variables populating data as you step through the code

Still just notepad. I like the way I can go to any computer and it is already setup and the same environment. Turn off word wrap, view status bar (for line numbers) and away you go. Never have used a debugger either, perhaps I should learn?

With PowerShell it's "PowerShell_ISE" all the way.
                                        -join([int[]][char[]]'Ut|jwXmjqq%Wzqjx'|%{[char]($_-5)})
