Winodws 7 Home Premium 32bit Upgrade Sunday, November 08, 2009 12:10 PM (permalink)

I attempted to upgrade from Vista Home Premium 32bit to Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit.
Just before the Upgrade gets really going it gives me this error.
"To upgrade Windows, the Users, Program Files, and Windows directories need to be on the same partition..."
I goes on to tell me that all program files, profiles, and user data need to be on C: I could do a fresh install but... all that software... :-O

I had switched my profile to D: because I like the separation.
When I tried to put it back it would not let me because a systemvolume file of some kind could not be moved ??? :-O

I think this will solve the issue, I'm doing this right now so I don't know if it will work, I'll edit the post with an update later tonight.
Create a new administrator type account (an account with rights).
Copy the D: drive data (over 3gig) to a flash drive.
Delete the offending account using the correct tool.
Use the other account to install Windows 7.

    So that didn't fully work.
I found that when you move one user all users get moved, how thoughtful...
I had to edit the registry looking for D:\users, change all the settings using C

I then restarted, created another new user with administrator rights, logged off and in with the new user.
    deleted the other user.
I double checked the registry for anything pointing to the D: drive.
Then made sure D: was blank (copied the files before).

    The plot get more icky.

That was the trick to get the user directory moved manually using regedit and getting the new account created on the C: drive.
It works fine so far, it took over 3 hours not including the futzin around.

Thanks for the info Mcds99.  I don't have of my systems setup this way, profile/apps on different drive just, but can never tell who might come to me with this issue.  And yes, the upgrades do take a while.  Think mine took about 4 hours.  But i have been using 7 since it was released to Licensing users and have not had any issues.  Plan on doing a fresh install of 7 x64 but am not looking forward to that.

          Interesting bit of information.

Windows 7 Home can't really be used on networks like Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate, this is because there is no Policy Editor in the Home version.

I've setup my laptop with an XP Pro and W7 Pro dual boot.

BTW Never, NEVER use the disk manager from XP after installing W7. I had about 128g left after setting up the dual boot and was in XP I didn't think twice about creating the disk and formatting it. OUCH! Windows 7 would not boot and required a reinstall. I then used disk manager in W7 the disk can be used in both XP and W7.
