used Adersoft's VBSedit and Jsedit for a couple of years. As I started to learn different scripting languages I moved to PrimalScript Enterprise. I chose Enterprise because of the C#.net abilities.

I think the free Visual Studio Express is better than the c# support in Primal so Pro is sufficient for me.

Ultra edit 12.

Has a really nice interface, plus collapsible subs and functions.  I love being able to customize the dictionary on how it understands the code.  It even understands Visual Studio .NET 2005 stuff.  I will give primal script a try also, it sounds nice.  The collapsible region is one thing Ultra Edit 12 lacks.

Peace out.....

I use Notepad2 (http://www.flos-freeware.ch/) that is freeware and it can show different color of syntax clearly.
And, start speed of this software is as same as notepad for windows

I use PrimalScript 2007 mostly, ASE for the script packager (for some reason PrimalScript 2007 will not work with my custom icons), and Notepad++ for anything other than VBScript or batch files (I have Linux servers in addition to my Windows servers, so I do a lot of shell scripting and PERL writing). Truth be told, I probably use Notepad++ more than any other piece of software (it's so much better than regular notepad).

Work pays for PrimalScript and ASE, and Notepad++ was free, so that is pretty much what I learned on (as a bonus there is a portable version available at portableapps.com).

notepad++, onscript, and vbsedit

ive used probably close to all the editors. never could get the miscrosoft script editor to work for me. i dig primalscript, but too rich for my blood. onscript was pricey, but you get unlimited license re-use (install on as many machines as you want), and i love its simplicity. all the features of vbsedit with... TABBED DOCUMENTS!! Haha, i love vbsedit though, great debugging.

Hoping for Visual Basic Script Express this year... I dont get the deal with microsoft and the lack of support for vbscript. I guess its kind of a weak language, but when you have to update/debug .vbs's with 10,000 lines (dont ask) you gotta love the perks of some of these editors. vbsedit is a steal of a bargain for like 49 bucks (unlimited installs). pick it up and dont look back...

O wouldn't hold my breath for a good VBS editor from MS. VBS isn't going away for many years to come but I suspect that anything new that MS does will focus on Powershell.

In order of usefulness and frequency of use;
VbsEdit, CodeLobster, PrimalSCRIPT 2007 Ent.

As far as usefulness, VbsEdit comes in at #1 and PrimalSCRIPT comes in last. I like how VbsEdit gives you an object explorer that updates it as you code. PrimalSCRIPT seems too worried about it's skin to be very efficient.

As for GUI's, CodeLobster comes in 1st and  PrimalSCRIPT comes in last. There's just something wrong with the PrimalSCRIPT GUI. You have to lock the output windows to ensure that you can see all of the necessary windows. It's buggy. CodeLobster's GUI is golden!

I agree that I have never really been happy with the PrimalScript UI. Right now though, the enterprise collaboration functionality trumps my dislike with the UI. I am going to give VbsEdit another look though and see if I can force it to work in a fashion that support team collaboration the way that I want.

It's a shame. VbsEdit seems like a much cleaner program that I think I would like better than PrimalScript. Unfortunately I have hit a show stopper. There is a character limit on snippet size. This seems like a silly limitation that would be relatively simple to overcome. For the time being I will just send an email to Adersoft explaining my requirements and if they fix it in the future I would really like to give it another try.

Also not show stoppers, but features that I would love to see in VbsEdit:

  • The ability to point to a snippets library on the network so that a standard set of snippets could be used by all the people in a shop.
  • Seamless CVS interface with *shudder* Visual Source Safe or better yet SVN.

I will also say that one other advantage PrimalScript has over VbsEdit is support for multiple languages. I realize that this is not the focus of VbsEdit so it may not be a fair comparison, but I routinely edit VBS, Perl, Powershell, HTML, and XML files. Sometimes all of those in the same day. The ability to have all these open in one editor is quite handy.

Ouch...just realized there isn't any tab support (or multiple document support of any type) in VbsEdit.

I do prefer the object browser in VbsEdit over the one in PrimalScript. As a matter of fact, I keep the one in PrimalScript turned off in general.

You brought up some great points that I never really considered. Code Snippet limit, tabs, & multilanguage support would be just choice additions. And of course team collaboration. So ya, VbsEdit may see a few more versions yet. I think I'll write in as well and see if we can't pursuade them to fix it up a bit more.

How are you running the scripts? Wine? Or are you only doing web scripting?
