One of the client machines at my workplace is causing me a bit of irritation. I found this computer in a filing cabinet (for whatever reason, and who knows how old), and tried to logon to it but came across the following problem:

The NetLogon policy and a few others have been disabled so I can't log on remotely,
ALL local accounts have been deleted. (Except Guest which is disabled by default and wouldn't help anyway)
So I'm struck at a logon screen.

Is there a way to restore the Local Administrator/Power User account from a bootdisk? or will I be forced to Re-install Windows? The Operating System is Windows 2000 SP4.

Either run the W2K Recovery wizard from CD-ROm to see if the ' default  '  accounts will be placed back...

I believe you cannot acces the PC from anywhere? Not even the WSH side, so you'd be able to create an account remotely? (you mentioned that remote login is unavailable, but how about remote access at all?)

Or, if all fails,  try the illegal way of the famous LINUX boot disc, maybe that will create the local account in an attempt to change the pw...(never had this situation, though)

If you have access to Windows PE then you could try to boot to it and either place a script in the all users start up that creates a user, all depends on rights, or you can try and load the PC's registry hive and make changes there.

Thanks for the help. I ended up using a boot disk and copying a backup registry onto the computer. Strangest thing I've seen on the subject. Not sure yet how all Local accounts could have been deleted.

Why is this illegal? I use this method for data recovery all the time.

Since you're bypassing all security models and have access to alter the SAMACCOUNTS, this is (officially) not the way to go.

But hey, where not holier than the pope.

So not so much illegal as undesirable. As soon as windows provides me with as simple a way to recover data from a dead hard drive i'll be happy to use it instead.
